Ikebana workshop with by azumi

Ikebana is the graceful Japanese art of arranging flowers in a manner that 'makes them come alive'.  Stemming back to the 16th century, Ikebana has its own language - it allows the flowers, stems, leaves and branches to offer meaning and a specific existence to people, time, place, occasion and season.  The use of auspicious materials, odd numbers, minimalism, colour and height all play into an arrangement to bridge nature and humanity.

Leading our Ikebana workshop is Azumi Ishikawa, creator and founder of byAzumi, a bespoke floristry studio located in South Yarra.  Born in Osaka with an instinctive awareness for the beauty in nature, Azumi watched her mother, an Ikebana master, create floral arrangements using local, seasonal elements.

Azumi initially trained and worked as a florist in Japan and then after several years, she sought to expand her knowledge and skills with further study in Germany, the epicentre of floral design. Azumi undertook her second apprenticeship in Munich, where she was exposed to German floral design theory and techniques. She brings immense knowledge to The Windsor Workshop and we know this will be a life changing experience.

Over a fun filled, champagne sipping afternoon you will learn…

  • the basic skills and techniques to form an Ikebana floral arrangement – Hanakubari is a contemporary Japanese Ikebana style.

  • the meaning of materials and Ikebana formation and arrangement

What You Get

  • All the necessary flower, stems and leaves to make your arrangement

  • A ceramic vessel to build your arrangement in

  • Delicious treats and nibbles to sustain you throughout the workshop

  • Information to reference at home post workshop

  • Omotenashi – which defines Japanese hospitality. “to entertain guests wholeheartedly”.

Azumi has an impressive knowledge and passion for Ikebana and imparts this with grace, respect and calm. Looking forward to doing more.
